Overview

  • Duration:9 days 8 nights
  • Tour Type:Group, Road Expedition

This is a Bhutan journey designed to help you experience the country beyond its famous landmarks. Alongside monasteries, dzongs and mountain landscapes, you’ll meet local communities, explore traditional crafts, walk through villages, eat farm-to-table food and spend time understanding the rhythms of everyday Bhutanese life.

From a dinner with a monk, artist or storyteller in Thimphu to cheese and farmhouse experiences in Phobjikha, traditional attire and archery in Paro, and slow walks through villages and nature trails — every experience has been chosen to help you see Bhutan through its people and culture, not simply through its sightseeing list.

There is also space to wander on your own, explore markets, linger over a meal or simply pause. Because the best journeys aren't always the ones where you see the most. They're the ones where you experience more deeply.

Itinerary

Day 1 Bagdogra to Phuentsholing | Entering Bhutan

Your Bhutan journey begins at Bagdogra, where you’ll meet your team and begin the drive towards Phuentsholing, the gateway into Bhutan.

The journey takes approximately five hours, gradually moving from the plains of West Bengal towards the Bhutanese border.

Once in Phuentsholing, the evening is intentionally unhurried. Settle in, have dinner and rest before beginning your journey deeper into Bhutan.

We prefer to complete the Bhutan permit formalities on arrival in Phuentsholing, with the paperwork pre-filed online, so the following days can remain focused on the journey rather than administrative formalities.

Overnight: Phuentsholing
Meals: Dinner

Day 2 — Phuentsholing to Thimphu | Into the Heart of Bhutan

After breakfast, begin the drive towards Thimphu, Bhutan's capital, travelling through the mountain landscape via Gedu.

The journey takes approximately 5–6 hours, but the changing landscape is very much part of the experience — the plains gradually give way to forested mountains and winding Himalayan roads.

In the evening, we move beyond the conventional restaurant experience.

Dinner at Gikuna Village brings you into a more intimate setting, where your evening may unfold around conversations with a monk, artist or storyteller. Rather than simply being told about Bhutanese culture, you get an opportunity to hear it directly from people who live it.

Overnight: Thimphu
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner at Gikuna Village

Day 3 — Thimphu | Discovering the Culture of the Capital

Start early at Buddha Dordenma, arriving before the crowds and experiencing one of Thimphu's most striking landmarks in the quiet morning light.

But today's exploration goes beyond the postcard.

Visit the Postal Museum, an interesting window into Bhutan's history, communication and identity, before heading to Choki Traditional Art School for a closer look at Bhutan's living artistic traditions and a Thangka painting workshop.

And then — we deliberately give you space.

You'll be dropped at the local market, where you can choose how to spend your afternoon. Browse, shop, find lunch, explore the streets or simply sit with a coffee and watch Thimphu go by.

There is no rush to get from one sight to another.

Overnight: Thimphu
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 4 — Thimphu to Punakha | Mountains, Monasteries & Legends

An early start takes you towards Dochula Pass, where arriving around 7 AM gives you the best chance of experiencing the pass before the crowds and, during winter, with clearer mountain visibility.

From here, continue towards the warmer Punakha Valley.

Visit Chimi Lhakhang, a temple associated with the legendary Drukpa Kunley, before stopping for lunch.

The afternoon brings you to Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan's most beautiful and historically significant fortresses, dramatically positioned at the meeting point of two rivers.

If time permits, cross the famous Punakha Suspension Bridge — a memorable way to experience the landscape rather than simply photograph it.

Overnight: Punakha
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 — Punakha to Phobjikha | Into Rural Bhutan

For those who are keen, begin the morning with an optional hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, making your way through the valley and its surrounding landscape.

Then drive towards Phobjikha Valley, a quieter and beautifully preserved part of Bhutan known for its dramatic landscapes and rural character.

Visit Gangtey Monastery before exploring the Black-Necked Crane Centre, followed by the Gangtey Nature Trail — an easy, approximately 1.5-hour downhill walk through the valley.

But the most memorable part of the day may be the simplest.

In the evening, visit a local farmhouse for tea and traditional Bhutanese cheese, creating an opportunity to experience food and hospitality in a more personal setting.

This is the kind of Bhutan we seek out — where the experience isn't simply seeing a place, but spending time with the people and traditions that make it what it is.

Overnight: Phobjikha
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6 — Phobjikha to Paro | From Valley Life to Paro

After breakfast, leave Phobjikha and begin the approximately 6.5-hour journey towards Paro.

The drive is long, but it allows you to watch Bhutan's landscape continually change as you travel from the quiet valley towards Paro.

After lunch en route, arrive in Paro and visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest and most sacred temples.

As evening arrives, slow down with a walk through Paro town. Browse the small shops, watch everyday life unfold and experience the town at its most relaxed.

Overnight: Paro
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7 — Paro | A Day in Traditional Bhutan

Today is about stepping into Bhutan's living traditions.

Begin with a visit to the National Museum, before heading to a heritage farmhouse where you'll get a more personal introduction to Bhutanese culture.

Dress in traditional gho and kira, try your hand at archery and khuru, and sit down for lunch at the farmhouse.

It's less about watching a cultural performance and more about participating in traditions that continue to be part of everyday Bhutanese life.

The evening is yours to explore the Paro market at your own pace.

For those who want to add more to the day, there are optional experiences including an early-morning Tiger's Nest hike with a supplementary guide and a traditional hot stone bath at the farmhouse.

Overnight: Paro
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8 — Paro to Phuentsholing | One Last Glimpse of Bhutan

Before leaving Paro, visit Tamchog Lhakhang and cross its traditional iron suspension bridge, offering one final opportunity to experience Bhutan's landscape on foot.

This can also be an alternative to the Punakha suspension bridge for those who weren't able to cross it earlier.

Around 11 AM, begin the drive back towards Phuentsholing, taking approximately five hours.

The evening is free to relax and reflect on the journey before your departure the following morning.

Overnight: Phuentsholing
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 9 — Phuentsholing to Bagdogra | Until Next Time

After breakfast, depart Phuentsholing for Bagdogra Airport.

Your Bhutan journey comes to an end — but hopefully, you leave with more than photographs of monasteries and mountains.

A few conversations, meals, walks and quiet moments that stay with you long after you've returned home.
